On July 19, 2025, torrential downpours reaching up to 100mm per hour struck Sancheong-gun, Gyeongnam, triggering severe flooding and landslides. This single event resulted in 5 fatalities, 2 individuals in cardiac arrest, and 2 missing persons. In just four days, from the 16th to the 19th, Sicheon-myeon in Sancheong-gun received a total of 764mm of rain. On the 19th alone, the day the landslides occurred, 283mm of rain flooded the area, leading to widespread damage.

Case Study 2: Gangnam Flooding

In August 2022, an unprecedented downpour, the heaviest in 115 years, hit Seoul's Gangnam-gu, Seocho-gu, and Dongjak-gu areas, with a rainfall rate of 141 mm per hour. This led to widespread damage, including the flooding of the Gangnam Station area and the complete submersion of stations on both the Line 2 and Shinbundang Line subways. Tragically, the disaster also resulted in the loss of eight lives, including a brother and sister who fell into a manhole while walking on a nearby street.
