① Climate change increases the atmosphere's capacity to hold water vapor by approximately 7%/K thus, higher specific humidity. This directly results in an overall increase in moisture flux over the Korean Peninsula, leading to a rise in total precipitation.

② The increase in precipitation is not evenly distributed over time, instead, characteristic of Changma changes. Data shows that the number of rainy days remains similar, but the total rainfall is greater, meaning that the increase is driven by more heavy rainfall events.

③ Future climate models project a significant increase in both frequency and intensity of hourly extreme rainfall (HER) events over South Korea, especially in July, under the high emissions scenario (SSP5-8.5).

We Revisit the Question

"Is Changma Precipitation becoming More Extreme due to Climate Change?"

The increasing damage observed during the Changma season is primarily caused by a fundamental shift in rainfall characteristics driven by climate change. This shift results in more frequent and intense extreme rainfall events. These events rapidly overwhelm both urban and natural drainage infrastructure, leading directly to flash floods and other destructive effects.

This study recognizes that accurate prediction of these extreme events is complicated by complex atmospheric dynamics, which are influenced by factors such as the Western North Pacific Subtropical High (WNPSH), jet streams, and various small-scale events. While our investigation did not focus on all of these factors, it is important to acknowledge their potential impact on Changma precipitation patterns.

To address the increased risk, we recommend focusing on several key areas. By further studies to improve understandings of uncertainties better, the government can provide real-time disaster information. Furthermore, the construction of stormwater drainage tunnels and the maintenance of drainage facilities are needed to prepare for heavy rainfall events.
